Be Aware: Drugs that can kill kids in a single dose.

Just a reminder to parents that kids can be pretty resourceful at finding things you don’t want them finding. Here is a list of medications that can be be deadly with a single dose for any children. We must be extra mindful if we have these in our homes or if our children are watched by anyone with these medications.

One to two tablets of certain medications can be lethal to a toddler. Please be mindful!

  • Heart Pills — In children, they can cause dangerously low blood pressure and heart rate, and even lead to shock.
  • Muscle Rubs — Camphor is especially dangerous because ingesting it works so quickly; symptoms occur within 10-20 minutes, and often children can go into seizures without any warning.
  • Prescription Pain Medications — For an infant, even half a tablet of hydrocodone can be lethal.
  • Aspirin and Oil of Wintergreen — Oil of wintergreen is particularly hazardous because its pleasant smell tempts toddlers to ingest it, but one teaspoon of oil of wintergreen is the equivalent of nearly 90 baby aspirins — a life-threatening dose for a toddler or child.
  • Antidepressants — After pain medications, antidepressants are the second highest cause of accidental death from poisoning in children younger than 6.
  • Blood Pressure Patches, Eye Drops, and Nasal Sprays — These medications, designed to be absorbed over time through your skin, can lead to serious consequences when ingested by a toddler. As little as 6 ml can lead to a coma.
  • Diabetes Drugs — As these medications are more commonly prescribed, the incidence of pediatric poisonings has also increased, with over 2,500 occurrences in the United States in 2001.

Parents should recognize the high risk of accidental ingestion and be prepared to act. Call 911 immediately, experts say, or call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. Parents should also be prepared to take their child to the hospital immediately, and they should bring the bottle of whatever the child took in the ambulance and to the ER. Importantly, new guidelines from the American Association of Pediatrics urge against the use of Ipecac or any other mechanism to induce vomiting.

Fortunately, once children are in the emergency room, doctors can rapidly respond, as some medications have antidotes, reversal agents or supportive therapy.

Paths of Destruction

I remember an illustration a professor of mine  used once. He said that once we do something or learn something we create a pathway in our brains that is there permanently, that is why many people have addictions or patterns.

The same goes true in our spiritual walk with God. People fall into the same sins all the time and wonder why they can’t get out. This is where Jesus comes in, we need to ask him to stand guard at the entrance of those paths and listen to him when he tells us to turn around and NOT go down that path of destruction any more!

We need to hear his voice when he tries to save us from falling over and over again. It needs to be a constant decision. This is why we take up our cross daily! It’s not enough to just ask Jesus into our lives but to obey him and let him guide us in the direction that is best for us!

There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death. Proverbs 14:12

He guards the paths of the just and protects those who are faithful to him. Proverbs 2:8

Yummy Homemade Pancakes

Wow. I love homemade food. Eating out is great and fast food is so convenient, but there’s nothing like making your own tortillas or bread. It leaves you feeling so accomplished. I like to make my kids homemade pancakes. They love them. Here’s my recipe for all you mommies out there. Kids love helping too!

Preheat Griddle or pan to Med-Med High

-1 cup Flour
-2 tbs Sugar
-2 tbs Baking Powder
-1/3 tsp salt
-1 tsp oil
-2 Eggs
-1 cup Milk
-1 tsp Vanilla Extract

Mix all dry ingredients first, and in separate bowl mix the wet ingredients. Combine them and mix well. Pour over hot griddle to make several dollar sized pancakes or regular sized. It’s totally up to you. Hope you enjoy~! (Hint: If you would like to skip the mess that syrup brings, especially with little ones, then add another tbs of sugar and let them eat them as finger food.)

How Many Times Do I Have To Tell You?

(A post from my earlier mommy years…)

We’ve all heard this one. And now that I’m a mommy, I can’t count the times I have said this. It just seems like 2 year olds don’t really care (or keep track) of how many times. Funny, because I don’t think i can really remember how many times either. How many times do I have to tell you, “don’t push your brother”, “don’t run with pencils”, don’t pick your nose”, “don’t wipe your hands on mommy’s pants” etc etc.

Well, I don’t know about you but I was sitting here pondering the whole “how many times do i have tell you” phrase and I was thinking about how many bad habits I have yet to overcome. Because reality is that every single person has to make the choice of obeying their parents or God for that matter…Because the truth is that unless we make that decision within ourselves, then it’s never gonna change.

We have to take the step to decide, “I’m tired of time outs and consequences, I’m going to change this.” So, whether it be picking up your socks and putting them in the hamper where they belong, or spending more quality time with your family instead of working too much, then make the choice…don’t delay. A quick decision in your mind & heart can be life changing and change a whole lot of things around you! It can even change the people around you.

Just like a stream of water that changes it’s course will always change its surroundings. Our lives are made up of decisions. Where are you going to go to college? Who are you gonna love for the rest of your life & marry? Are you going to have children? Are you going to work or stay home with your children? Those are just some of the common ones. And a very important decision that we all make in life: Are you going to give your life over to Christ, who gave his life for you?

You see, when God made Adam, he made him free to make his own choices…he made a bad one in disobeying God’s 1 command…but he was free to make that choice.

I’m going to paraphrase this, but Paul says in the new testament that everything in life is permissible but not everything is beneficial. SO, just because you CAN do it doesn’t mean it is the right thing to do. God himself made a decision to give his Son up to die for OUR wrongs. (Wow, we are so loved) I can in no way repay God for what he did, but I’m going to do my best to try to. I will give him my whole heart, my whole life, and do all I can to make sure He is happy with who I am. Because I already know how much he loves me, I can be myself and let him shape and mold me. I hope you let him do the same in your life.
